Business Studies BTEC Level 3 – Equivalent to 1 A Level

Aims of the Course

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in the areas of Business Studies. The course focuses on:

  • Developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for working and managing resources in today’s workplace
  • The role of the various sectors of economic activity; their inter-dependence and the role of the section/department by which they are structured and how the overall organisational structure contributes to the realisation of aims and objectives
  • Providing opportunities for students to focus on the development of the major key skills and the wider key skills in a technological context, such as improving own performance, working with others and problem solving
  • Providing opportunities for students to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life

Units of study

The course consists of six units studied over two years:

Unit 1:

  • The Business Environment (Core) 10 credits
  • Learning Outcomes: Know the range of different businesses and their ownership
  • Understand how businesses are organised to achieve their purposes
  • Know the impact of the economic environment on business
  • Know how political, legal and social factors impact on business

Unit 2:

  • Business Resources (Core) 10 credits
  • Learning Outcomes: Know how human resources are managed
  • Know the purpose of managing physical and technological resources
  • Know how to access sources of finance
  • Be able to interpret financial statements

Unit 3:

  • Introduction to Marketing (Option) 10 credits
  • Learning Outcomes: Know the role of marketing in an organisation
  • Be able to use marketing research and marketing planning
  • Understand how and why customer groups are targeted
  • Be able to develop a coherent marketing mix

Unit 4:

  • Business Communication (Option) 10 credits
  • Learning Outcomes: Understand different types of business information
  • Be able to present business information accurately
  • Understand the issues and constraints in relation to the use of business information in organisations
  • Know how to communicate business information using appropriate methods

Unit 9:

  • Creative Product Promotion (Option) 10 credits
  • Learning Outcomes: Know the constituents of the promotional mix
  • Understand the role of promotion within the marketing mix
  • Understand the role of advertising agencies and the media
  • Be able to create a simple promotional campaign

Unit 10:

  • Market Research in Business (Option) 10 credits
  • Learning Outcomes: Understand the main types of market research used to make marketing decisions
  • Be able to plan research
  • Be able to carry out research
  • Be able to interpret research findings

Potential Careers

The BTEC Level 3 Business Studies course provides opportunities for full-time students to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment in the field of business/economics or progress to higher education vocational qualifications such as BTEC Higher National Diploma in Business / Economics / Management.
