How to Train in Counselling?
We offer a vocational route in Counselling Training. All our courses are part time evening / twilight which means that you will be able to continue working whilst you study. Part time training takes 4 years which provides you with the opportunity to develop the personal and professional skills and qualities required of a Counsellor. You will work with experienced Tutors throughout your training and benefit from developing relationships with other students.
First Steps into Counselling Training (1 year – 25 weeks)
First, you will begin with the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills course CSK-L2.
This is a part time evening course which will teach you how to use counselling skills to help others. These skills are recognised for use in the workplace and can also be beneficial in your personal relationships.
This course is the first step in training to become a Counsellor and will prepare you for the next level of your training.
Next Steps in Counselling Training (1 year – 25 weeks)
Next, you will continue with the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies course CST-L3.
This is a part time evening course which will teach you more about counselling theory and practice.
This course is the next step in training to become a Counsellor and will prepare you for the final stage of your training.
Last Steps in Counselling Training (2 years – 33 weeks pa)
Finally, you will take the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling course TC-L4 to become a fully qualified Counsellor!
This is a part time twilight / evening course which will complete your theoretical knowledge and therapeutic practice to provide counselling services within the context of an agency’s service framework.
You will also undertake a supervised counselling placement as part of your training.

How to Develop your Skills and Knowledge?
We offer workshops in areas of interest to support your personal and / or professional development. Our workshop events are open to everyone and are held on Saturdays throughout the year. You will have an opportunity to meet others with similar interests in an informal setting with lunch included. You will receive a certificate of attendance for 5 hours of CPD.

Suitable for practitioners, therapists and health professionals and anyone seeking ways of managing the stresses and complexities of today’s world. Working Therapeutically with Disordered Eating & Eating Disorders – with Dr Julia Buckroyd

This workshop offers an introduction to trainee and qualified counsellors and others to consider a framework for understanding the misuse of food, using attachment theory, and then to offer a wide range of strategies for working with clients. The workshop is active and interactive; participants should be willing to reflect on their own eating behaviour as well as that of their clients.
Client Assessment & Referral – with Molly Ayre

This workshop is for qualified and trainee counsellors who would like to gain a better understanding of the methods of assessing clients for counselling work. The workshop will consider how different methods of client assessment relate to different therapeutic approaches and compare & contrast different models. You will be able to select a model of client assessment which is suitable for your needs.

Understanding Loss & Grief – with Jo Ansell

This workshop is for qualified and trainee counsellors and other professionals who may work with people bereaved or facing bereavement. The day will cover how we experience and process bereavement and what those working with bereaved people can do to help. The theory and ideas will also be helpful for supporting people grieving other life changing losses.
Understanding the Nature of Trauma: The Threat Response in Humans – with Zoe Lodrick

This presentation outlines and explores the basic neuroscience of threat response in humans. Zoe provides a rich narrative and examples from her work to illustrate what happens when we perceive or experience threat. This presentation is suitable for anyone personally or professionally interested or working with clients in this field.

The Marriotts Counselling & Training Academy is a recognised and approved Centre delivering CPCAB units and qualifications in listening and counselling skills. We offer courses from levels 2 to 5 to support you in achieving your goals.
Training courses and workshops are delivered at the newly build ‘State of the Art’ Marriotts School in Stevenage. We have a suite of fully equipped classrooms with additional spaces for study and skills practice. Learning resources are available for students’ use and include computers with internet access and printing facilities. Refreshments are available on site and there is plenty of free parking.
The Marriotts Counselling & Training Academy works with Marriotts School to provide a safe and secure environment which supports the individual needs of its users. Through counselling and training we are able to facilitate personal and professional development and contribute to growth of our community.
Maddy Ratcliffe is the Counselling Manager of the Academy. She is a qualified practicing Counsellor and Supervisor with further experience as a trainer. Maddy has been instrumental in establishing independent counselling services in schools in Stevenage. She has received recognition for her contributions to the local community including a nomination for the SoStevenage Pride of Stevenage Awards 2013.
Molly Ayre – practising person centred Counsellor, Supervisor and Trainer with over 20 years experience working in the Voluntary Sector and in Private Practice. Molly began managing and delivering counselling courses since 2003 and has worked closely with Awarding Bodies to develop high quality training in North Hertfordshire. She holds a PGCE and is committed to supporting trainee and qualified counsellors through training and continuous professional development.
We have a team of approved course tutors who are all practicing Counsellors with experience in delivering CPCAB qualifications.
Our team are all individual members of the BACP.
