The Government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. This has been followed by the Prevent Duty 2015.
At Marriotts we have an important role to play supporting this strategy. We recognise that:
- Schools should have an awareness and understanding of the risk of radicalisation, in their area.
- Schools should promote the spiritual, moral, social and culture development of pupils as well as community cohesion and fundamental British values.
- Schools should be safe spaces in which children and young people can understand and discuss sensitive topics, including terrorism and the extremist ideas, and learn how to challenge these ideas. We also recognise that we should be mindful of our existing duties to forbid political indoctrination and secure a balanced presentation of political issues.

Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism
Radicalisation is defined as the act or process of making a person more radical or favouring of extreme or fundamental changes in political, economic, or social conditions, institutions or habits of the mind.
Extremism is defined as the holding of extreme political or religious views.
We will actively challenge students, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including those expressing extremist and radical views. Marriotts School has a zero tolerance approach to extremist behaviour for all school community members. We rely on our strong values and ethos to steer our work and ensure the pastoral care of our students protects them from exposure to negative influences. We are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its Students. As a school we recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation is no different from safeguarding against any other vulnerability. All staff are expected to uphold and promote the fundamental principles of British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Although serious incidents involving radicalisation have not occurred at Marriotts School to date, it is important for us to be constantly vigilant and remain fully informed about the issues which affect the region in which we teach. Staff are reminded to suspend any professional disbelief that instances of radicalisation ‘could not happen here’ and to refer any concerns through the Child Protection/ Safeguarding Lead Teachers.
It is also very important that we explore diversity with our students, so they are more than just tolerate people who are different to themselves, but are respectful. Assemblies are used to address this issue, and it is also covered in our Marriotts Lifeskills programme. Most importantly respect is expected and modelled through all aspects of school life.
